Report 2017-119 Recommendation 25 Responses

Report 2017-119: California State University: It Has Not Provided Adequate Oversight of the Safety of Employees and Students Who Work With Hazardous Materials (Release Date: April 2018)

Recommendation #25 To: Channel Islands, California State University

To more effectively provide oversight of its chemical plan, Channel Islands should annually evaluate its chemical plan for effectiveness and document the results of that evaluation, including its discussions of any recommended revisions.

60-Day Agency Response

The Channel Islands EH&S unit conducts annual reviews of the Chemical Hygiene Plan(CHP) to certify that the document continues to provide effective safety guidelines and reflects best practices. The annual review meetings include EH&S staff, as well as Departmental chemical hygiene officers/safety coordinators. Each person must provide their signature and date confirming they have reviewed the CHP. The evaluation is intended to provide a

comprehensive assessment of effectiveness. Revisions to the Chemical Hygiene Plan will reflect best practices and aim to safeguard the health and welfare of students, faculty, and staff.

Recommended revisions, alterations, amendments, or modifications to the CHP will be discussed, evaluated and documented. EH&S will annotate recommendations and implement appropriate changes to the CHP.

The initial documented review took place on May 10, 2018. We have provided documentation related to the May 2018 CHP Annual Effectiveness Review's scheduling and participants, as well as the May 2018 Chemical Hygiene Annual Evaluation and Effectiveness

Review document, signed by the participants.
